The Application of āsana

Think of the best Yoga class you’ve ever taken. Remember how you felt during the class? And how you functioned in your life afterward? Do you wish you could feel like that again? and again?

Designing a Yoga class is both art and science. Organizing the movements, grounding them in breath, and developing a theme requires both a feel and an understanding for the desired experience. It requires having the sense of how things will be experienced as well as understanding what each technique is intended to accomplish. As a teacher, or as a student, understanding the ancient Indian concepts upon which the practice of Yoga is organized is important.

The Application of Āsana class is intended to help you understand the design of both your practices and experiences. It works by discussing classes that you’ve experienced yourself.

The Application of Āsana class will explore:

  • The organization of a class so it is safe, coherent, and inspiring
  • The design of a practice so it accomplishes your physical, energetic, and emotional goals
  • How to choose movement, breathing, and meditation techniques that complement and enhance one another
  • How to modify various postures while retaining the benefit and the cohesion of the class flow
  • How to select the most potent and purposeful techniques for your aim

Join us for The Application of Āsana and you’ll learn to put together awe-inspiring Yoga classes rooted in the deep wisdom of Indian anatomies. Feel how prāṇa moves in you, and then discuss how to apply that in the practices you teach. Discover the ancient Indian teachings and ideas that inform how you breathe, move and where to put your attention. Access the deeper teachings of yoga in your personal or teaching practice.

Prerequisites

The Application of Āsana class discusses the structures and experiences of the Yoga for Vitality and Strength classes taught online every Monday at 10:45am Central. Students who are already enrolled in Yoga for Vitality and Strength are invited to join this discussion group that takes place the last Monday of every month from 12pm-1:15pm CT.

Get the most out of class by taking notes after Yoga for Vitality and Strength: what worked in your practice? What didn’t? How did you feel after practice? Do you need any clarity needed on certain techniques? After your reflection, join us LIVE for the monthly discussion. So much richness comes from our individual perspectives, questions and experiences.

If you are unable to attend the live class, a recording will be available in the Student Portal. We also have a Ryver discussion group where you can comment and ask questions!

Amanda Green

Amanda took her first yoga class in 2001 and has been practicing ever since. After moving from Seattle to Austin in 2010, she enrolled in a hatha yoga teacher-training program and immediately began teaching yoga full-time. Amanda met her mentor, Chase Bossart in 2011. At this time, her yoga practice took a turn toward a more gentle and therapeutic approach and her yoga study expanded to embrace the broader teachings of yoga.

Amanda’s teaching style is down-to-earth, clear and practical.  She candidly relates yogic concepts to life experiences. In this way, yoga practice becomes a deeply personal journey and a means to live a fulfilling and purposeful life.

Amanda is a graduate of the YATNA yoga therapy program and an IAYT-certified yoga therapist. She offers individual yoga therapy to students in Austin, TX and online. Amanda is a mentor to yoga therapy students in YogaWell and Yoga Yoga programs, and offers lectures and classes in her local and online community. When Amanda isn’t teaching, you can find her hanging out with her awesome family, gardening, painting, or singing karaoke, usually out of tune.
